Stealing a phrase from Harold Macmillan, UK pole anglers really have never had it so good when you look at the amazing choice of high quality but yet affordable kit they have available to choose from.

This has now been reinforced by the arrival of the Maver Pole Apocalypse 13m pole.

At just under 300 pounds this superb pole will suit the potential commercial pole angler and surprisingly this new Maver pole maintains enough stiffness and rigidity even when deployed to it's full exent to give the angler a really pleasurable and effortless experience. The 300 pound price tag also includes a spares pack of 3 power tops.

Whilst this may not be the stiffest of poles, it is light and remarkably unfussy to use, it has all the strength that is needed to cope with any amount of unwieldy handling which the beginner will undoubtedly inflict upon it. The flexibility of the Maver Apocalypse will be forgiving enough to allow for mistakes without your day ending in tears.

This Maver pole has been manufactured by a clever use of different grades of carbon which has allowed Maver to create a very strong pole but also providing sufficient wall strength through all of the nine sections.

The usual pole weak spots eg ends of section joints are all reinforced on the Apocalypse and what we found really good on what is after all an entry level pole, is that Maver have marked each of the sections with arrows to make sure that it is easy to assemble the pole correctly. This in turn ensures that the pole is always at its optimum stiffness.

Maver have given a great deal of thought to making the Apocalypse easy to elasticate even for a novice angler. Worth mentioning that the 2 piece power top kits supplied will need to be trimmed back a small amount so they are the same as the match kit 2nd section. This will result in all 3 of the spares being approximately the same length.

Overall, the Maver pole Apocalypse is a highly recommended pole, light enough to sue all day long, yet stiff enough to give you the confidence that the pole will handle more or less anything that comes its way.

Maver pole boss Phil Briscoe continues to keep the Redditch based companies products at the peak of their game. With the maver pole Competition range now about to enter its 5th year in 2011, the line up is as impressive as ever.

With the continuing trend within commercial fisheries for ever heavier fish the range has been revamped to provide extra strength in sections 4,5 and 6.

One of the overwhelmingly great things about the Competition range from Maver pole is the fact that they are generic, so it doesn't matter if you own an mid level pole like the 181 or top of the range 501, they all share the same top kits and high quality Maver pole features. So well worth bearing in mind that as you fancy upgrading then your existing top kits will fit your new Maver pole.

The 16m long Competition 181 is well and truly in the viciously competitive market of the under a £1000 range, so you can bet that Phil Briscoe has remembered that for that money the modern angler wants a lot for his money and so Maver have duly delivered.

Manufactured using Nanolith technology the Compeition 181 maintains it's strong, stiff feel throughout and particularly at the longer lengths. The top kits feature the Fusion process to eliminate tip bounce, and the Magic Step ridges permit the smoothest flow of elastic with absolutley no juddering.

If that wasn't enough then add in the Teflon joints which greatly reduce the wear and tear on them, clean caps thrown in as well and you have one of the most advanced poles on the market today.

At 13m the pole is superbly rigid and very responsive, this doesn't change much after adding the next section to take it to 14.5m. Only at 16m does the stiffness change, but it is still more than perfectly acceptable to use.

With the Compeition 181 you get two Power kits, one Match top 3, a cupping kit and cups, mini extension and clean caps. Added to which Maver even give you a deluxe holdall and instructional DVD, now what more could you possibly want?

Another truly outstanding deal from a great Maver pole.
